Science Olympic Champions

12 schools from across Wirral competed against each other in the Aimhigher Science Olympics competition at the University of Liverpool on 30th January.

At the Science Olympics competition

The pupils visited the Department of Physics at the University of Liverpool to take part in a series of events that tested their science knowledge, team working and communication skills as they worked to achieve the highest scores on the day and win through to the grand finals later in the year.

Activities included: 'Float Your Boat', 'Just in Time', 'Sweet Trader' and 'Projectile Rocketing'.

The team from Wallasey School triumphed on the day and will be competing in the final with teams from all over Greater Merseyside for the Science Olympics title this summer.

Third place on the day were the team from St John Plessington Catholic College and runners up in second place were the group from Calday Grange Grammar.

David Painter, organiser of the Aimhigher Science Olympics and a physics graduate from The University of Liverpool explains:

"The day is aimed to help students learn and develop skills in a fun and interesting way. The competition is a way of making science more accessible. We hope that activities such as these will begin to spark an interest in science and inspire the pupils to study the subject at university."

Comments from pupils on the day included:

"Today was fun and enjoyable…I learnt a lot!"

"today was fantastic. Every bit of it was fun!"

 "Awesome and entertaining"

"Great day. Well organised - brings out the competitive element in everyone"
