Aimhigher Greater Merseyside

Professor Fluffy

The Aimhigher Primary Project works with Year 5 pupils in primary schools throughout Greater Merseyside aiming to raise awareness and introduce higher education through a range of interactive and fun activities.

The project is based at the University of Liverpool and is delivered in partnership with Edge Hill University, Liverpool Hope University, Liverpool John Moore University and the local Further Education Colleges. The above partners have already opened their doors to more than 1,500 primary school aged children and their parents as part of their widening participation programme.

Aims

  • Raise aspirations of young people
  • Link students with local young people as role models
  • Increase self esteem
  • Increase life chances
  • Raise awareness of further/higher education with young people
  • Raise awareness of further/higher education with parents

Why Primary?

The project is part of a wider initiative designed to inform primary school children about the education options available to them and to help with decisions about their future. Some children have already closed down their options in relation to Higher Education by the time they have reached secondary school.

"Too many young people are missing out on the opportunity to study at university, because they are not introduced to the idea early enough. This is an effective model for engaging children in higher education, which will help alter access trends in this country. This supports the Government's aim to ensure 50% of young people in the UK enter higher education."
